Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches

Eleven churches carved downward into solid rock.

Overview

Rather than being built up, the churches of Lalibela were carved down into volcanic rock, with trenches and tunnels linking them. Tradition credits King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty, who wanted to create a “New Jerusalem”.

The churches remain a living pilgrimage site, especially during Ethiopian Orthodox festivals.
