Medieval UNESCO World Heritage Peru

Machu Picchu

An Inca royal estate high in the Andes.

Overview

Machu Picchu was built around the middle of the 15th century, probably as an estate for the Inca ruler Pachacuti. Its temples, houses and agricultural terraces show the Inca mastery of fitted stone and mountain engineering.

Local farmers knew of the ruins long before Hiram Bingham brought them to international attention in 1911.
