Budj Bim Cultural Landscape

One of the world’s oldest aquaculture systems.

Overview

In southwest Victoria, the Gunditjmara people built an extensive system of channels, weirs and ponds in the lava flows of the Budj Bim volcano to trap, store and harvest short-finned eels. Parts of the system are at least 6,600 years old.
