Bronze Age Pakistan

Harappa

The site that gave the Harappan (Indus) Civilization its name.

Overview

Harappa in Punjab was occupied for nearly two thousand years, from early village settlements to a major walled city at its height between about 2600 and 1900 BCE. Excavations here in the 1920s first revealed that the Indus Valley had been home to a forgotten urban civilization.

Much of the ancient brick was removed in the 19th century to build railway embankments, but the mounds, gateways and cemeteries still tell a remarkable story.
