Prehistoric UNESCO World Heritage France

Lascaux Cave

Ice Age paintings of horses, aurochs and deer.

Overview

Discovered by teenagers in 1940, Lascaux contains hundreds of painted and engraved animals made around 17,000 years ago. The original cave was closed to the public in 1963 to protect the paintings.

Visitors today see Lascaux IV, a precise replica at Montignac that recreates the cave and its art.
