Skara Brae

A Stone Age village with its furniture still in place.

Overview

On the Bay of Skaill in Orkney, a winter storm in 1850 stripped away sand dunes to reveal a cluster of stone houses. Because wood was scarce, the villagers built their furniture from flagstone — so beds, shelves and hearths survive almost intact.
