Overview
Stonehenge began around 3000 BCE as a circular ditch and bank. The great sarsen stones were raised around 2500 BCE, while the smaller “bluestones” were brought from the Preseli Hills in Wales, more than 200 km away.
The monument is aligned with the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset, and sits within a wider landscape of burial mounds and ceremonial sites.
