Early Modern UNESCO World Heritage Pakistan

Lahore Fort

A Mughal citadel layered by Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb.

Overview

A fort has stood on this spot for many centuries, but the citadel visitors see today was largely rebuilt by the Mughal emperor Akbar from 1566 and embellished by his successors. Shah Jahan added the marble Sheesh Mahal, the “palace of mirrors”.

Together with the Shalamar Gardens, the fort forms one of Pakistan’s World Heritage Sites.
